Shall undertake the duties that in their judgment advance the cause of affordable housing for all graduate students. The Director will work to negotiate with UCLA administration regarding ways to implement a $1,000 maximum rent guarantee for all graduate students. The Director will have resources provided, where necessary, to travel to represent the GSA on affordable housing matters.
Shall be responsible for keeping the graduate student body aware of all pertinent GSA activity. The Director shall work to maintain a unified and professional GSA brand identity and facilitate the exchange of information among graduate students, officers, cabinet, forum representatives, councils, administration, and various media outlets. The Director’s duties shall include but are not limited to producing and or reviewing a bi-weekly newsletter, and official press releases; brochures, flyers, emails, podcasts, and websites; and collaborating with a webmaster or other technical staff to research and implement emerging communication technologies.
Shall oversee the distribution and use of SFAC/GSA funds to qualified graduate student groups in order to support programming for graduate student events. The Director maintains written guidelines and application forms, determines the annual and per event allocations for these student groups and facilitates the appropriate and timely distribution of funds. The Director also provides advice to graduate student groups regarding the procedures, requirements, and guidelines for acquiring and utilizing SFAC/GSA funds.
Shall be the director who represents the GSA in all matters of diversity and equity affecting the UCLA graduate student body and shall achieve this mission through active engagement with the campus community around issues pertaining to underrepresented and underserved students.The director will work with various other cabinet members to fight for lower rent, increased unionization (including unionizing GSR’s), and increased access to childcare.
Shall be responsible for coordinating a variety of social, cultural, and recreational programs that foster interaction among UCLA graduate and professional students from diverse academic disciplines. The Director in consultation with the GSA Cabinet and Forum determines the specific number and nature of programs offered each academic year.
Shall be responsible for programming and coordinating films and panels twice a week as the GSA Melnitz Movies. The Director is responsible for selecting films for screenings and providing an opportunity for student groups who seek sponsorship of film-related events. The Director manages all aspects of coordination, including budgeting, publicity, screening supervision, and print-traffic management.
The Director shall represent GSA on all issue related to climate change and addressing the ongoing climate emergency. The Director shall encourage divestment from fossil fuel companies. The Director shall be responsible for overseeing the Sustainable Resource Center. The Director shall sit on the ASUCLA Sustainability Committee and the Campus Sustainability Committee and shall be a liaison to other student and campus groups relating to sustainability.
The GSA Union Liaison will work to strengthen ties between the GSA and the various unions that represent UCLA workers and students.
The Finance Director is expected to work 10-15 hours a week from the date of appointment to the end of the 2019-2020 academic year. The Finance Director will receive a stipend of ($1,200) per quarter and be given an office location in Kerckhoff Hall.
The Finance Director shall ensure that all submitted GSA check reimbursement forms are filled out correctly. The Finance Director shall review check requisition forms that are submitted by all graduate academic councils and graduate organizations. In addition, the Finance Director must effectively educate all graduate organizations and academic councils to correctly submit check reimbursements to ASUCLA and GSA. The Finance Director shall hire and lead graduate or undergraduate student finance coordinators to assist in accomplishing the above-mentioned responsibilities during the 2019–2020 academic year.
Shall be responsible for administrative tasks of the Vice President cabinet, in large part related to various committees and GSA forum. In this role, the director will be part of recruitment process of new GSA committee members and insure smooth function of committees by building effective communication channels. Further, the director will work with the forum members to develop an agenda and otherwise help with forum meeting organization.
The Legislative Director will focus on statewide and national legislative advocacy that directly impact graduate and professional students. This office is particularly interested in looking at legislation that affects student wellness, basic needs coverage, and professional development/guidance.
The Organizing Director will focus on statewide and national organizing, as well as grassroots advocacy in support of graduate and professional student issues. This will often include offering support to our labor unions (i.e. UAW and AFSCME) on campus and working closely with on student organizations to create effective campaigns.
This year UC systemwide campaigns include getting out the vote, acquiring basic needs for underrepresented students, and funding the UC.
The Community Relations Director will focus on local advocacy that will involve tracking local ordinances and mobilizing the community to support graduate/professional student issues.
